Quality Road Cycling and Montain Biking
Castle Carrock and its surrounding area are perfect for cyclists, taking in a maze of quiet and almost traffic-free roads, well maintained cyclepaths and mountain tracks - making our Cumbrian hotel a popular base for cyclists of all abilities. Whether you want a gentle ride through leafy lanes and rolling lowland hills, extensive rides around historic Hadrian's wall, or energetic and challenging mountain biking routes - cyclists could not be better catered for in the countryside around the friendly, informal Weary Sportsman hotel.
Whether bringing their own bikes or hiring them in nearby Brampton, many visitors come to our Cumbrian hotel to explore Hadrian's Wall country. Some visit as part of their trip from the Irish Sea to North Sea coast as part of the national cycleway that traverses our region, and still more arrive to pedal around the assorted, well planned circular routes that take in the Hadrian's Wall path and the countryside around. Starting at the Weary Sportsman Cumbrian Hotel, cyclists can enjoy a well signposted route that takes in the market town of Brampton, the ancient priory at Lanercost, the route of Hadrian's Wall, pretty rural villages and the Roman fort and Celtic cross at Bewcastle. This takes a full day, but with quiet tracks and pathways criss-crossing the area, the ride can be adapted to suit cyclists of any ability.

Mountain bikers can start on the doorstep of our Cumbrian hotel and immediately head out to the fells, weaving upwards along exciting tracks, taking in magnificent views before an exciting descent back to their welcoming and luxurious lodgings. Geltsdale and the tracks through Gelt woods also make for thrilling riding, along undulating sandy paths (watch out for tree roots!). For great views, rides for all abilities and long stretches of track all to yourself - North East Cumbria is a memorable location for cyclists.
For cyclists who prefer a relaxing day on the saddle, the wooded shores of Talkin Tarn offer gentle rides in a picturesque setting - an easy trip for a few hours starting from our Cumbrian hotel. And with miles and miles of deserted lanes to explore around the Eden valley, our guests can enjoy cycling at their own pace!
